The Barbecue Steering Committee, excellently chaired by Shirley this year, began meeting in August…which is a full four months earlier than they’ve met in years past — so they’re already way ahead of the game!

By way of duties, Beth and Erik are handling sponsorships and advertising.  Kathy is handling the competitors (with Larry providing guidance and consultation from the competitor’s viewpoint), Lettie and Mike are handling judging and last, but not least, Christy and George and handling vendors and the car show.  Ann is serving as Immediate Past Chair…so picking up projects and tasks as they come up – and as always, John is our liaison for city business, licenses, approvals, etc.

Recent accomplishments have been to agree on the various event elements so that Erik can create a sponsorship package and the agreement of the fee structure for competitors and vendors.  Applications are currently being updated and will be released in January.  Kathy is currently updating the website and we had an on-site visit in Bicentennial Park on November 30th to collectively agree on the event’s layout, which will be different this year than it has been in year’s past.

We’ll give you another update on our progress and more details as we get them firmed up…but know that everything is coming along nicely and most importantly — we’re having a lot of fun at the same time!

The restaurant within the clubhouse is called the Boulder Creek Grill and we have been very happy with the wonderful atmosphere, food and service we have received when we’ve visited them in the past. And since the Boulder Grill is where our sister club, Sunrise Rotary meets for breakfast — we’re happy to bring our weekly meetings there and make it the exclusive weekly meeting location for Rotary in Boulder City!

St. Jude’s has been a wonderful partner for our club over the past several years and we cannot thank them enough for the hospitality they have shown to us. We look forward to continuing our support of the Ranch in all that it does for its children and all that it is in the Boulder City community!

In honor of her commitment to service at such a young age, Ashley was awarded a Paul Harris Award and we are extremely proud of her accomplishments.

We look forward to the day when Ashley is a full-fledged Rotarian…but perhaps we’ll let her graduate high school first!

In addition to updating the website to a new hip and cool design, we had several other goals and believe that we met them.

We wanted to introduce what Rotary is immediately and clearly…which is why one of the first sections of the site is the question “What Is Rotary?” and its subsequent answer.

We then wanted to explain how Rotary began, what the object of the organization is, what the avenues of service are and then delve into information specific to our individual club.

There is a “Recent News” section, which is not intended to provide a wrap-up of weekly club activities…Lynn does a great job with the weekly newsletter for those items.  The “Recent News” on the website is geared more toward letting non-club members and/or prospective club members know what we’re up to outside of our weekly meetings…whether that be fundraising events, service projects, Paul Harris Fellowship news, etc.

We also have an updated membership list, a list of the various projects and organizations we support and of course – a complete calendar of events – both past and future!

Beth W. was asked by one of her Boulder City firefighting friends if we could lend a hand (or two or twenty) to help him and some of his fellow firefighters. Seems there is a senior citizen that Walt looks in on from time to time and over the past year or so, her yard and hour exterior had fallen into a state of disrepair that would no longer do.

Boulder Tree Service came and trimmed all of the trees, a bunch of our club members come out to clean up the yard in that aftermath and Walt’s brother repainted the carport. I believe the firefighters might have even hitched a tree stump up to the back of a truck and pulled it out, as well!

Because of the great turnout, it only took a couple of hours out of everyone’s Saturday mornings and we’re all feelin’ good….well, dirty and sore and good!

We were also thrilled to have his visit time nicely with the induction ceremony of our two newest club members: Kent Roberts and Mike Gardner. In fact, Governor Doug actually did their inductions!

Following the lunch meeting — the Board held its monthly meeting and brought Governor Doug up to speed on all that our club is doing. We were very proud that we had a lot to tell him…from our success in increasing membership to our Speedway fundraising to our new website!

Admittedly, the days were long and it took a bit of time to get comfortable with all the rules and regulations that must be followed when working in food service…but we did catch on eventually AND learn to do math in our heads very quickly (let alone make correct change).

We had a crew of 8-9 people on each of the two days of the event, which means that there will be plenty of club members who are experienced booth personnel for when the next event rolls around.

Besides learning the ropes and raising funds on this event — we all had a great time working together on Saturday…which we usually do. Sunday was quite a bit more somber, of course – as it was the day of the terrible collision that took the life of IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon. Our hearts go out to his friends and family!

Mrs. Ringen spent a number of years working with students to promote Rotarian values and during her tenure as Principal of Boulder City High School, Ann Nelson enjoyed working with her on youth competitions and other projects.

We appreciate all that Mrs. Ringen did for our high school students and both of the Rotary Clubs in Boulder City!

Thanks to Frank and Larry for preparing an excellent meal, while Beth, George and Christy delighted our visiting Rotarians with their gift bag items!

Larry, Ann and Kathy spent a few hours down at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this morning…but unfortunately, it wasn’t to have fun watching any races!

Rather, it was to receive a full debriefing on all the rules and regulations involved with running a concession booth at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which we’re scheduled to do for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 15t and Sunday, Oct. 16th.

For this, our first fundraising event at the Speedway, Larry will serve as Stand Manager, Kathy as Assistant Stand Manager and Ann as Banker Extraordinaire.
